Mata Vaishno Devi is one of the holiest pilgrimage destinations for Hindus. Thousands of devotees visit the holy shrine to seek the blessings of Mata Vaishno Devi. Devotees have to follow a journey of 14 km from Katra to visit Mata Vaishno Devi Darbar. 

Situated at a height of 35,000 feet, the holy shrine is nestled in the laps of Trikuta Parvat. It is an arduous journey to visit the Darbar, but the legend says that Mata Vaishno Devi grants all the wishes who undertake the trip and if you start the journey, you will be able to visit the holy shrine no matter what. 

However, specific measures should be considered when preparing for Mata Vaishno Devi Darshan. Here is a list of all those measures you should remember.

1. Before you start your journey, it is essential to get a general check-up. It is not uncommon to observe devotees getting sick on a difficult journey. Knowing your blood sugar level and blood pressure will help you to develop the stamina and strength required to complete the trip.

You can also practice walking a week before and exercise regularly to customize yourself to the arduous journey ahead.

2. The path to Mata Vaishno Devi Darbar is sloped and tiled. Pack good-quality walking shoes, preferably from premium shoe brands, to make the journey easier. Wear the shoes at least fifteen days prior days before the journey to get comfortable in them. Wear them with socks to keep your feet warm and dry in the chilly altitude.

3. Wear comfortable clothing when travelling to Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. The clothes you will have to pack depending on the climate you’re travelling in. The Holy Shrine is open throughout the year, with the peak season being during the Navratri. To enjoy a comfortable journey, you can travel between March to October. Still, if you love the cold, you can visit the shrine during winter to enjoy more charming scenarios. If you are travelling in cold winters, remember to pack woollen clothes, gloves, and scarves.

4. If you decide to walk on the holy route or take any of the transportation facilities available, make sure to register correctly at the Katra base. Carry proper ID documents for verification. Registration is a must, as you need a yatra slip to cross the checkpoints. If you book a helicopter ride, tickets must be booked at least two to three months before your travel date.

A helicopter ticket for Katra-Sanjichhat-Katra is considered a VIP pass. Palanquins and ponies are also available for the elderly and sick. 

5. Items like a comb, watch, phone, camera, comb, water bottle, leather belts, and chappals cannot be carried into the holy shrine. You are advised to keep your belongings at the hotel itself. Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Boards offers a variety of economical accommodation options for the devotees. However, due to the large footfalls of pilgrims, it is always recommended to book well in advance.

You can reach Katra by air, train, or by road. To travel via air, you must reach Jammu Airport, where taxis and cabs can easily take you to Katra. The nearest railway station to Katra is Udhampur Railways Station, where taxis are present, which can take you to Katra. Several air-conditioned buses are also available between Katra and Jammu.
