One exciting thing about planning to seek Darshan of Mata Vaishno Devi in Katra is that it is open throughout the year. No matter the season or weather, you can pack your bags and travel to the abode of Mata Vaishno Devi. The most visited Hindu Temple lies in Katra town in Jammu & Kashmir. Katra, therefore, serves as a base camp for the uphill trek to the Trikuta mountain, where Mata resides. The holiest pilgrimage of Mata Vaishno Devi is also considered a Shakti Peeth.

The sacred place has the manifestation of Maa Durga in her three Supreme forms. They are Mahakali, MahaSaraswati and Mahalakshmi. Naturally, the temple holds tremendous religious significance among devotees. Daily, it is visited by thousands of devotees, irrespective of the month, season or harsh weather conditions. During winters, the snow-peaked mountains make for an unmissable sight. So here are the tips on planning a Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra during winter.

1. Yatra registration is mandatory regardless of the season. The route to Mata Vaishno Devi shrine will be covered in snow. Thus, the journey gets more fascinating to begin and cover. You may get lucky to witness snowfall during this time.

2. Note that during winters, the temperature can go down to a significant low as -5 degree celsius. That often happens from the end of December to January. Thus, expect low temperatures and heavy rainfall.

3. Pack extra woollen clothes. You will be provided blankets along the Yatra. So it is up to you to carry or not to carry them. However, blankets will be there to avail free of cost.

4. Try to avoid wearing fancy shoes and slippers. Hiking shoes are better and preferable for the arduous trek of 13 km uphill. Better grip soles make it easier to trek the track.

5. Darshan during winter is a magical time. Always go for a Mata Vaishno Devi tour package when visiting the holy shrine. Winter season is always better than the monsoon to begin the beautiful trek.

6. Ban Ganga is the starting point of the trek. There are battery-operated cars which you can rent. The transport will drop you off 2 km before Bhawan. The Bhawan gets closed at 10: 30 pm at night.

7. Leave all your belongings in the locker, as nothing is allowed inside except cash. If you don’t have a medical history or suffer from any disease, winter is the most magical time to visit Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine.
