How to Reach Katra
Katra is the base destination for all the pilgrims and tourists who are on their way to visit Mata Vaishno Devi. Katra is around 46 km from Jammu, which will take approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach via car or cab.
By Air
Mostly people and pilgrims who opt for flight arrive at Jammu. Jammu Airport is well-connected to the major cities of India. As such, the convenient and fastest way is to board a flight and reach the city of temples (Jammu).
By Train
The train is the closest medium to get close to Mata’s Dhaam directly. Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station now brings you to your trekking point. So, check well in advance if the train to Katra runs from your city.
By Road

Main Trek (Katra) to Bhawan
The following are the routes you will encounter to reach the main complex shrine of Bhawan.
Darshani Darwaza
Darshani Darwaza, situated 2800 ft above sea level, gives a bird’s eye view of Trikuta mountain. It is from here that your trek journey will lead in two ways. One is an old traditional track which has been in use for years. The alternate route is developed for the heavy influx of pilgrims to ease their journey. You can find stalls of Tea/Coffee, Soft Drinks, and eatery points installed on this route. To reach Darshani Darwaza, you can either walk or hire an auto-rickshaw.
Ban Ganga
After crossing your first Yatra Parchi Check Post, you will come across a small bridge under which the Ban Ganga flows. Here, devotees take a sacred bath before proceeding with their Yatra. Legends have it that Mata Vaishno Devi created this water body after shooting an arrow to take a dip and wash her hair.
Charan Paduka
Just a km away from Ban Ganga will you find Charan Paduka of Mata Vaishno Devi. This spot is said to be the first stop of Mata Vaishno Devi, where she stood and looked back to see if Bhairon Nath was still chasing her or not.
Ardhkuwari
Ardhkuwari Cave is where Mata Vaishno Devi did her penance in complete seclusion and peace for nine months. Ardhkuwari, meaning eternal virgin, is from Mata’s days of penance and meditation, where she achieved her spiritual powers. When her meditation was disturbed due to Bhairon Nath’s presence in search of her, Mata opened another exit to the Cave and moved towards the Holy Cave.
Sanjhichatt
When you reach Sanjhichatt, know that you are at 6200 ft above sea level. Witness the breathtaking view of the vista surrounding Trikuta Hill. The distance is only 2 km from hereon before you finally arrive at Bhawan. Helipad facilities from Katra to Vaishno Devi also board you to this point.
Bhawan
Arrive at your ultimate destination. The sanctum sanctorum houses the sacred place of Mata Vaishno Devi. Inside the Holy Cave, you will find three Pindies, each representing the Tridevi – Mahalaxmi, MahaSaraswati, and Mahakali. After offering your prayers, and seeking Mata’s blessings, do not forget to visit Bhairon Nath Temple above the temple. It is said that Mata’s Dhaam journey is incomplete without paying respect to Bhairon Nath Temple.
